Mindset Preparation
There’s a reason we keep some stories buried. Maybe they feel too raw. Too complicated. Too painful.
Holding a painful or shameful story inside you doesn't make it disappear.
You already know that because you are whatever-years-old and that story may be as vivid now as when it first happened.
Just be prepared for emotions and perhaps tears to spill out, but be comforted by the thought that releasing your story will bring relief and may even healing.Â
Write your story for yourself first.
If you choose to share it with someone or publish it, it may be exactly what they need to hear.Â
But that's your decision. Either way, you get relief and healing.Â
Â
Writing Tip
Start with the moment you almost didn’t say something—then write what came after. Use the sentence:
“I thought about telling this once, but…”
Encouragement
You don’t owe the world an account of your pain—but you do owe yourself the relief, wholeness, and healing that comes from naming it. There’s power in writing what once felt unspeakable.
Takeaway
At the start of my life story classes, a few students often inquire, "There are some stories I don't want to share. Will we be able to write about whatever we choose?"
"Of course," I assure them.Â
The irony is that once the class begins, the very story they kept buried for years, spills onto the page.

Insider Tip
There is a story that won't be silenced.
Once you open the door, it rushes out like the air in a popped balloon.Â
This is the story destined to heal you, but could also connect and inspire those with whom you share it.
Final Note
What’s a story you’ve dodged around for years? You don’t have to share it yet. But maybe this is the week to at least acknowledge it.
